At first you enter this world that is seemingly full of promise and has the potential to be one of the best cyperpunk experiences. However, one hour into the game, you find your expectations deeply let down by a complete lack of voiced dialogue which hurts immersion without the existence of a history log for conversations and a pretty boring gameplay. Seriously, why doesn't the decker have any relevant skills to help outside the matrix levels (which are very few over the course of the game)? Where's the hacking of the meat world electronics? Besides some magic abilities, why are there so many boring skills in this game? Do not make the same mistake as I did to keep playing the game hoping it will get better because you're a fan of the cyberpunk genre. You're just being taunted with a promise that ends up not being fulfilled.. You could be forgiven for thinking the Shadowrun universe was written and imagined by William Gibson, author of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive - the references here to nuyen, the matrix and even character names such as Armitage are lifted directly from the pages of his work. You can forgive the developers for doing so however, as the original cyberpunk fiction works are the perfect basis for a game and world such as this. Shadowrun combines the science fiction, 'high tech\/low life' approach of Gibson's cyberpunk with the fantasy sorcery of Dungeons & Dragons, creating an interesting blend of the two genres. This means you can play as an elf, an ork or a Dwarf but carry around a hacking deck and submachine gun too. The best result of this combination is the combat of the game, where isometric, 1990s turn based shooting is interspersed with magic spell including various buffs, debuffs and fireballs. The story approach of Returns is far more linear than those 90s RPG greats you will think of while playing, as you are pressed from one scenario to another with no free-roaming available, with a chunk of text introducing the area and context as you load in each time. The story itself is a fast paced mystery along side crooked cops, serial killers and hidden overlords, but at times feels a light lore-light. The game could have fleshed out it's character creation and specifically hacking aspects to make the world feel more substantial. The meaty expansion to the game Dragonfall, does rectify some of these issues and the pen and paper universe of Shadowrun (now 30 years old this year) has plenty of backstory available to draw on. Overall the package is a fast, enjoyable take on the 90s isometric RPG style, but definitely could've used more areas to explore, characters to interact with and opportunities to really 'roleplay', besides becoming a badass in combat. This game is worth playing for the setting alone and combat alone.. Shadowrun is awesome! I was never a big fan of turn-based games until I played this game. The rock solid story is engaging, the characters are wonderful, the world is beautifully imagined. This is one of my favorite RPGs. For anyone who is a fan of turn-based games it is a must have. For anyone else who likes RPGs and isn't afraid to try something different I also highly recommend.. I played the Shadowrun series in reverse order; first Hong Kong, then Dragonfall, then Returns. While Hong Kong is the best in the series, this game is pretty good too!. I'm honestly wondering where all the good reviews are coming from.The one thing i really enjoyed about this game was the writing style. And it runs on my laptop so i could waste a few boring hours on it. But that's about it.The soundtrack is so bad and dull I had to switch it of after a short time.This is supposed to be a RPG but the whole progression is more like an oldschool shooter - room after room, chat after chat. Nothing to explore, choices don't matter at all. No sidequests. Even the way you develop your char doesn't really matter. You NPC's have no personality. On top of this, the tactical fights aren't even challenging. And it's short. When you feel like the tutorial is over and the proper game starts you're already halfway through. Don't be fooled by my playtime, it includes a couple of nights sleeping next to my laptop still running the game ;DI guess the game is alright for die-hard p&p fans (like I used to be) and it's reasonable priced, I recon that. I'd give a thumbs up for that. For regular RPG players it's honestly not worth it.
